The elegant 2nd Floor at the Holtz Building is available for sale, a unique investor only opportunity. A landmark architectural jewel, The Holtz Building was built in 1907, when the Fifth Avenue and Broadway area south of 23 rd Street was developed. Residences mansions of the generation earlier were moved uptown, and the area was converted to business where commercial buildings rose. The building was named after F. Charles Holtz, a German businessman who arrived in the United States from Hamburg in the mid 19th century. Charles Holtz was listed as dealer of Havana cigars, champagnes and French and German wines. He opened the first successful Holtz Restaurant on Dean Street, followed by a second one at Broadway and Franklin, named by the New York Times as "one of the finest appointments in the City". The reputation of the Holtz restaurant rose and the third Holtz Restaurant ideal location was 7 E 20 th Street, on the short block between Fifth Avenue and Broadway. Philip Braender who owned the property at 7 and 9 East 20 th Street commissioned architect William C. Frohne to design a 12 story loft building, with the lower two floors being specifically customized for the Holtz Restaurant, boasting refined French cuisine. Completed in late 1907 the brick and stone structure was embellished with Beaux Arts carvings of garlands, wreaths, lion's heads and scrolls. The first two stories were embellished with expenses of glass, on the second floor a full wall of fine decorated French windows was created. Above the second floor windows a decorative medallion announcing 'HOLTZ', adorned by a pair of odd creatures, part griffin part cornucopia. It conveyed Paris on 20th Street. Throughout the years the building and the 2nd floor homed successful commercial activities. Today the Holtz Mixed-used Condo building is comprised of 4 floors of commercial spaces and the 8 floors above of residences.
