MICHIGAN WOODED PARCEL FOR SALE! This 80-Acre Wooded Property is located in Laird Township, in south-central Houghton County, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is in the middle of outdoor recreational opportunities in every direction! It is surrounded by thousands of acres of the Ottawa National Forest Lands. The Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness is a 14,000+ acre unit within the Ottawa National Forest, and is only about 6 miles south of the property offered for sale. Here, the 20 foot Sturgeon Falls drops over volcanic outcroppings, and goes though a gorge that is 350 feet in depth and a mile in width. The Sturgeon and Little Silver Rivers and many tributaries have created falls and rapids, oxbows and ponds through these rugged forested lands. There is access to the North Country National Scenic Trail in this wilderness area. The Trail is over 4,800 miles long and crosses eight states, making it the longest of the National Trail Systems. A mile to the south east is access to the 810-Acre Prickett Lake. This lake is also known as Prickett Dam Backwater, and reservoir created in 1931 by the damming of the Sturgeon River. The lake is about 5 feet deep near the southern end, and about 56-feet deep near the dam on the north end. There is a public launch site for boats on this water body, and it has lots of crappies and bluegills, and walleyes, largemouth bass, perch and northern pike to challenge anglers. The Silver Mountain, one of the most highly scenic "mountains" of close by. During the 1840s and 1850s mining days, prospectors attempted to find a rumored secret silver-lined cave and wall of silver in the area. They didn't find any silver, but evidence of an old closed off mine shaft, and some buildings can be found at Silver Mountain. The Mountain is a 1,312 feet tall high glacially polished dome-shaped basalt bluff. Because this promontory is located in the heart of the Ottawa National Forest, the Civilian Conservation Corps erected a fire tower at the summit to watch over the forest lands below, but that was abandoned when the Forest Service started using airplanes to detect fires. It eventually deteriorated, and was removed in 1971, but the ruined concrete footings of the tower still remain, along with the stairs up the mountainside. The mountain has a series of outcrops of bare igneous rock, which on the south side shows numerous 10,000 year old scars of glacier scour. These Cliffs average about 75 feet high - Year round sport, slacklining, trad climbing, top rope climbing is available here! The Winona/Alston Trail is about 4-5 miles to the west, for snowmobiling. About 10 miles away is the Village of Baraga where you will find grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, motels, and a casino. The Village is located on the shore of Lake Superior, so you will also find a marina to launch your Big Water boats. If you are seeking a larger wooded parcel in the Upper Peninsula, check this one out!
