Welcome to Roadside Cottage! This Devon home is anything BUT a cottage, but when Jane Gilbert Adler Embick had the house constructed in 1905 on a 1-acre lot that her Mother had sub-divided off from their 7.5 acre estate next door, that is what she named the house! What she constructed was an amazing 3-story Colonial Revival home where the perfectly proportioned, symmetrical faade facing the street greeted guests with a welcoming full-width front porch with an extended, pedimented gable roof & those lovely quarter-round windows in the 3rd floor bedroom. The front faade belies the scale of the house that extends significantly into the back yard, presenting a modest street view to a much larger home. The covered side entry is the formal entry for guests just off the driveway that leads into the gracious foyer. The driveway continues all the way to the rear of the property where the expanded, detached 2-car garage, workshop and in-law apartment are located! The entire house & the in-law apartment were completely renovated & expanded (including a complete re-wiring of the house) with exquisite detail by Toates Architecture in 2006, a leading Philadelphia-based firm that are experts in historical & traditional fundamentals. One enters into a spacious foyer with the primary staircase lit by a large northern window. The living room occupies the entire front of the house with flanking bookcases & a gas fireplace. One of the 2006 expansions was a 3-story addition off the living room, that now houses a spacious home office with French doors to the side yard. The large dining room can easily hold dinners for 18 people and has a corner wood-burning fireplace, southern windows & detailed moldings. The 2nd expansion from 2006 is a large breakfast room with French doors to a private side deck. The gourmet kitchen was also completely remodeled with Cherry & painted cabinets designed to reflect a period-appropriate design. There is a 36 Viking gas stove & a 24 Viking Wok stove with a pot filler above. The central island has a bar sink, marble counters and seating for 4 stools. The wet-wall with the sink & dishwasher faces north and has soapstone counters. A reclaimed full-height China cabinet with wood counters, glass doors & storage cabinets occupies another wall. There's great storage & prep space! The final expansion from 2006 is the mudroom & vaulted family room. The mudroom has a walk-in closet (with a custom bench & storage wall), a walk-in pantry, a desk with storage cabinets and the 1st powder room. The family room is anchored by a wood burning fireplace on one wall, a series of bookcases & cabinet storage on the opposite wall & 3 sets of French doors to the rear stone patio, covered with a cedar trellis & wisteria! From the kitchen, one walks through the butler's pantry with more reclaimed cabinetry or to the rear staircase, the 2nd powder room & back to the main entry. On the 2nd floor, the owner's suite occupies the entire front of the home. There are two large closets AND a walk-through closet for ample clothing storage. The ensuite bath is amazing, with wood floors w/radiant heating, a steam shower w/ rain head, a soaking tub, 2 vanities & a W.C. The 2nd bedroom has an ensuite bath renovated in 2014. The 3rd bedroom is at the rear of the hallway, past the hall bath renovated in 2006 and the 2nd floor laundry & linen storage. The 3rd floor has 3 more spacious bedrooms, a hall bath renovated in 2006 & an ensuite bath renovated in 2014 that is attached to the most amazing space with those two round windows one sees from the street! The basement is finished with two sitting areas, a wine cellar, the 3rd powder room, a 2nd kitchen area and a space under the family room used as a casual playspace. Over the garage & workshop is a vaulted in-law suite with its own HVA/C system. A whole house Kohler generator services the entire house AND the HVA/C for the apt.
